Bannau Brycheiniog spans south Wales in four blocks: the Black Mountain in the west, Fforest Fawr, the central Beacons around Pen y Fan (886 m), and the separate, confusingly named Black Mountains in the east. Old red sandstone gives the range its scarp edges and flat-topped summits, and the escarpment walking is some of the best in Britain.
